Kintsugi Class in Tokyo Ueno
In this Kintsugi Class, you will learn the traditional Japanese technique of Kintsugi, where broken ceramic ware is fixed by applying lacquer and gold dust. Our Kintsugi class is usually taught one-on-one, but you can also book a private group class for up to 3 students. Each class takes about 2 – 3 hours, with a break period for curing the bonding agent.
Because this is an introduction class, we do not use real gold dust and lacquer, but a high quality metal substitute and bonding agent instead. The finish and durability is comparable to the traditional techniques. After the Kintsugi restoration is completed, your finished piece can be used as regular ceramic ware. Please keep in mind though, that ceramics repaired with Kintsugi are generally not considered food safe.

持ち物 | WHAT TO BRING
Please bring your own broken or cracked ceramic piece (for example a teacup with 1 – 3 cracks, or a plate that has been broken into 2 – 3 pieces). If you would like to repair a piece with more damage than that, you might need to book an additional class, since it will take more time to fix the piece.
If you have any questions regarding the repair of your broken ceramic piece, feel free to contact us and tell us the size (height / width / length / diameter) of your ceramic piece and the damage (how many cracks / how many broken pieces). We can give you an estimate on how to fix your ceramic piece.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CLASS
Please wear clothing and shoes that are comfortable and easy to wash. During class, we are using glues, resins, metal dust and other materials, which might cause stains that are difficult or impossible to remove. We will offer you an apron to wear during the class, but the apron might not cover everything. Please be aware of this. We advise customers who worry about their clothing and shoes, to bring an alternative set to wear during class.
Hair & Nails
Customers with long hair might be more comfortable when tying up their hair. We kindly advise you to bring your preferred hair accessories.
Customers with long nails or nail art might have difficulties when working with ceramics and glues. Although we will assist you with your work, we also advise you to keep your nails short if possible. Customers with nail art or manicure should also be aware that working with Kintsugi materials and tools might damage their nail art or manicure. If you have dry or sensitive skin, we would like to advise you to bring a hand cream to re-hydrate your skin after the class.
We provide aprons to protect a part of your clothing during the class, as well as water, soap and towels to wash and dry your hands. If you have other special requirements, please bring the products you need with you. Please understand that we cannot be held responsible for any stains and damage of clothing, shoes or other items, or any other damages that result from this class. By following the above advice, working with ceramics is a fun and safe experience. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
